Portrait miniatures began to flourish in 16th century Europe and the art was practiced during the 17th, 18th and alos in the 19th century. They were especially valuable in introducing people to each other over distances or to remember a beloved person in the distance.

PAIR OF PORTRAITS WITH EMPEROR FRANZ I. STEPHAN OF LORRAINE (1708-1765) AND ARCHDUCHESS MARIA THERESIA OF AUSTRIA (1717-1780)

Gouache on vellum (laminated on carton), 18,7 x 14 cm, cast and gilt brass frame: 27,5 x 25,5 cm.
Both standing in elaborate court robes next to tables burdened with the Austrian Crown Jewels, with classical drapery and columns in the background, Austrian frames with French Royal Crown cresting and fleur de lis decoration.

Emanuel Thomas Peter studied from 1818 at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and was one of the students of Moritz Michael Daffinger.

Watercolour on ivory, gilded original frame, 7,8 x 9,4 cm, with engraving backside  „Marie Gräfin Kinsky geb. Gräfin Czernin geb. 12ten August 1806 - gest. 20. Dezember 1872". Maria Czernin of Chudenitz (1806-1872) was married with Joseph Erwin Kinsky of Wchinitz and Tettau (1806-1862).

Johann Richard Schwager studied at the Vienna Academy as pupil of Johann Ender and Leopold Kupelwieser. He was one of the last important miniaturists from the circle of Daffinger.
